Sequelitis: The Fifth Element

So it came up in conversation the other day “what movies should have sequels but never got one”.   Several were mentioned but the one suggestion that stuck out to me was Fifth Element (a futuristic space adventure epic starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovivich).   If you've never seen it, then go watch it and then read this post.

Since The Fifth Element is my favorite movie, I started thinking way too hard about this topic.  What should the sequel be like?  Should it even have one?  Who would be in it?

I believe that The Fifth Element was a perfect little chunk of a story the way it is.  It’s not a perfect movie by any means but it had its setup and conclusion.  If a sequel existed it would have to go with one of two directions.

1)      Dump the entire original cast for a new one (save for a few cameos) and make a new story.

Now this is seems like it will be a problem to me.  If the magic can’t be recaptured with a new cast then we’re all just going to cry that this isn’t Fifth Element it’s just something else in the same world (i.e. Angel Links Syndrome).  What would the story even be?  It can’t be a rehash of the first, that’s a copout, and if Luc Besson is at the helm I really don’t think that’s the way it would go.

There are a few possibilities that I can think of but there’s a ton of room for error with them.  We could start the story in the fog of New York. Perhaps there could be people living down there looking for liberation and a chance at a better life, but that doesn’t seem like much potential for comedy... unless they do get their “better life” and are allowed to stay in the rundown apartments of the city and have to deal with all the crazy antics of city life.  Or we could have some kind of intertwining story involving all of the cab drivers of the city and watch all of the people in back seats share their stories (potential Bruce Willis cameo here).  Or we could leave the planet all together and make a story in space, perhaps revolving around the Mondoshawan.  There’s possibilities, but I don’t find them to be very good ones.

OR
2)      Bring back the original cast and try to make a new story even though the first story is over.

I actually think this is the best route to go as long as they don’t make up a new villain who wants to get their hands on the stones and undo the story.  That will only lead to the DBZ syndrome, always another villain.  And it can’t be a prequel.  I don’t think they can pull off a movie about Korben’s military days.  BUT, there can be a legit continuation.  Korben promised Leeloo a real vacation didn’t he?  Guess what!  ~ Vacation time brother! ~ Vacation time brother! ~ Vacation! ~ Vacation! ~  All we have to do is find a new locale for them to go on vacation.  Korben and Leeloo on a getaway vacation and by chance meet Ruby Rhod and the others again…

Oh ya, we can have the same cast, we can have the same back story, we can have the love story, and we can have the comedy.  Guess what.  We can even have the drama of a revenge story. Don’t look at me crazy... I know what I’m talking about here.  If you've ever read the book, you may remember at the end of the story some extreme wtf nonsense happened and –SPOILERS- Zorg survives the hotel explosion and gets flung to an icy tundra on a nearby planet.  Ya.  He survives the explosion, hurdling through space, entering an atmosphere, and landing on a planet.  All we have to do is pick him up off the planet fix him up to look a little beat up and roll with his revenge plot for his deal with the shadow planet being ruined and him getting exploded off the hotel.  And of course he’s going to do it all himself since he did say “If you want something done, do it yourself.  Yep.”  Queue wacky plans that fail while Korben and Leeloo try to enjoy themselves and I think I would definitely watch this.

Now Wiki has a little rumor on it that a sequel tentatively titled Mr. Shadow was planned, but Luc Besson said it wasn’t.  But let’s imagine for a minute, what if it was?  I imagine it would be all about Mr. Shadow… which doesn’t sound very entertaining.   It sounds like a really serious story of how the shadow planet came to be.   Sounds boring to me…  Good thing it never existed.

I’m sure there could be more possibilities…. and I know there’s continuing fanfics out there…. but I don’t feel like reading any of them.
